Chapter 1
For five years, I was the kept woman of Jordan Sterling, a big-shot financier.
Then, bam! He went bankrupt and was about to jump off a building.
My first instinct? To bolt.
I was practically stuffing my Louboutins into my Louis Vuitton when a bunch of comments popped up in my head.
[Girl, run! Every step counts! You’re about to lose a leg!]
[Once he claws his way back to the top, his first target is the ex-wife who ran off with the cash.]
So, I did a total 180, rushing over and clinging to Jordan's legs, fake-sobbing like a pro.
“Honey, don’t jump! I haven’t even paid off the last installment on my new Birkin bag.”
Immediately, the comments section blew up.
[Wow, is she basically pushing him off?]
Jordan turned around, his face a mask of shock.
“Why aren’t you gone yet?”
I doubled down on my act, clinging tighter.
“You promised to take care of me forever! You can’t go back on your word!”
The comments were still rolling in.
[No wonder he hated her later. She deserves it.]
[He’s about to off himself, and all she cares about is bags and money. Poor Jordan.]
[If the second female lead isn’t dumb, how can she show the goodness of the first female lead? Once he jumps, the real female lead will come on stage to save him, I am so looking forward to it!]
I rolled my eyes at the comments.
I had to try my best to hug Jordan tightly.
He glanced down at the traffic below, rubbing his temples like he had a migraine.
“I’m broke. I can’t afford to take care of you anymore.”
“There’s a card on the desk in the bedroom. It has five million in it. The PIN is your birthday. Just go.”
I couldn’t see his face.
But that was the first time I had heard him speak in such a helpless tone.
He was arranging my escape route even as he stood at death’s door.
I tugged at his shirt, my voice firm.
“No! I’ll take care of you, then!”
He looked back in surprise, his eyes full of complicated emotions.
Before he could answer, I continued, “Today’s our fifth anniversary! I even got you a gift!”
The wind on the roof suddenly picked up, making his shirt flap.
He seemed even more likely to fall.
It took him a moment to ask, sounding completely incredulous, “You got me a gift?”
In five years of marriage, Jordan had given me countless presents, but this was the first time he’d heard of me getting him anything.
I held out my hand.
“Let’s go home, okay?”
He hesitated, then finally put his hand in mine.
The comments were screaming.
[Wait, isn’t that the female lead’s line?]
Back at the apartment, Jordan stared at the gift I pulled out, looking speechless.
I held up the latest bodycon dress from CR, sizing it up against Jordan.
I said seriously, “It looks a little small.”
Then, faking annoyance, I added, “CR doesn’t do returns. Oh well, guess I’ll have to wear it.”
Jordan actually chuckled, but the bitterness was evident.
He turned around and headed back towards the roof without a word.
Before I could react, he’d disappeared around the stairwell.
I stomped my foot, letting out a frust...
