I was finally gonna do it. At graduation, I was gonna tell Jake, my major crush, how I felt.
Across the street, Jake was getting his picture taken in his cap and gown, looking like a total stud. I got so hyped up I just ran across the street, not even noticing the "Don't Walk" sign.
BAM! A car nailed me, and everything went black.
When I woke up, I was in a hospital bed, and guess who was standing there? Jake. But he was giving me this cold, deadpan stare.
"So, you're awake," he said, all flat. "Good, we need to finalize these divorce papers."
Me: Wait, what?!
I haven't even confessed my feelings, and we're already talking divorce?
1.
Graduation. That was supposed to be the day. The day I confessed my undying love for Jake Miller, my long-time crush.
Across the crosswalk, Jake was looking all handsome in his cap and gown, getting his photo taken. I was so amped up, I didn't even see that the light was red.
THUD! Everything went dark.
When I opened my eyes again, the first thing I saw was a sterile white ceiling.
And standing right beside the bed? Freaking Jake.
He was still gorgeous, of course. I guess this was the closest we'd ever been. He was staring at the IV drip, then his eyes slowly moved to my face.
My gaze drifted down, and I saw it. A wedding band on his left ring finger.
I’d been crushing on him for ages. And turns out, he was already taken?
Swallowing down the lump in my throat, I managed a weak smile. "Hey, Jake. What are you doing here?"
I tried to sit up, and that's when I noticed the thick bandage on my arm.
He pulled up a chair beside my bed, his voice cold and distant.
“Looks like you’re really committed to this charade, Liz. Risking your life just to get a divorce.”
I stared at him, confused. What was he even talking about?
Divorce? I hadn't even graduated yet, let alone gotten married.
Just then, a nurse came in, carrying a tray with bandages.
"Dr. Miller, you're still here? Miss, you're so lucky! Dr. Miller just happened to be passing by, and he gave you first aid. Otherwise, you'd be in worse shape than a broken arm."
The nurse was busy cleaning and bandaging my wound. And when my hand was resting on the bed, I saw it. A ring on my right ring finger.
And it was clearly a matching set with Jake's ring!
Panic washed over me. This wasn’t possible. After the nurse left, I grabbed Jake’s sleeve.
“Jake, you’re Jake Miller, right? You graduated from med school a few years ago, class of ‘21, right?”
Jake frowned, like he couldn't stand the touch. He yanked his sleeve back, his eyes like ice.
“Now that you’re awake, let’s get down to business with the divorce agreement.”
2.
This was completely messed up!
I was just on my way to graduation and got hit by a car.
How did I wake up as someone who was trying to get a divorce from Jake and "risk it all" to make it happen?
Either I'd lost my mind, or Jake had.
"Wait a minute, Jake!" I said.
Before I could finish, a little kid ran into the room, and straig...
