My wife, Sarah, was a schoolteacher, the kind who pushed our son, Alex, way too hard.
Just because he got second place in a math test, she beat him, locked him in the school’s creepy basement. I later heard her on his smartwatch, yelling, “Are you an idiot? Only 98% on a math test!” “Do you even know how embarrassed you made me? You should just go die!”
But at the same time, she was all sweet and caring towards this kid named Kevin, who was average at best. Then, like she wished, Alex died. And her perfect life ended right there.

I was on my way to school, that was where Alex went, when I got the call that he had died. His birthday gift, a new skateboard, was still in the trunk of my car.
My mind just went blank.
I couldn't wrap my head around it. Yesterday, we were video chatting, now he was dead, in that cold, damp basement.
My hands were shaking so bad I could barely hold the steering wheel, but I drove as fast as I could.
When I got to the school, my legs felt like jelly.
A teacher led me to the basement, a place where they stored old equipment, cold and damp.
Alex was scared of the dark and had a bad heart. To spend a night there… I didn't want to think about how much he must have suffered before he died.
A small gurney lay on the concrete floor, Alex’s body so small it barely made a dent in the white sheet.
I reached out, my hand trembling, and pulled the sheet down.
And there, before me, was Alex’s body.
He was covered in bruises, his once-bright face a horrible shade of purple, with dark circles around his eyes.
I staggered back, almost falling.
"How did this happen?"
I screamed, my voice shaking.
"What kind of teachers are you? Letting my son die in a basement?"
The other teachers looked at each other, like they were hiding something.
I tried to get it together, clutching my chest, my voice full of anger.
"Your school better give me some answers or I will take you to court.”
One of the teachers, a guy with glasses, sighed, looking at me with pity.
"Mr. Peterson, it's not how you think it is."
"It was Mrs. Peterson, Sarah, who locked him in the basement. And she’s the one who hurt him.”
I was stunned, frozen.
I always thought Sarah was just hard on Alex, but I never imagined she could do something like this.
My hands were shaking, tears running down my face.
"Are you sure?"
The teachers around me looked at each other and lowered their heads.
"Mr. Peterson, we know you don't want to believe it, but it’s true."
The glasses-wearing teacher patted my shoulder, as if trying to comfort me, or get me to accept the truth.
"After yesterday’s test results came out, and Alex got second place, Sarah got angry. She beat him, then locked him in the basement."
“But nobody knew something this awful would happen.”
My eyes were blurry, the sounds around me fading, with only the teacher’s words echoing in my head.
My Alex, my sweet Alex, had been killed by his own mother, over something so trivial!
I was lost in this pain, I had to call Sarah, right...
