My fiancée, Sarah, went and did an IUI for her "bestie," Mark, and I left her a signed divorce agreement.
Before I bounced, I commented on their Instagram post, a pic of the two of them, all smiles. I wrote:
“Divorce papers are ready. Enjoy your ‘happy family’."
Within a minute, she called, all pissed. "Leo, are you being serious right now? Mark's not into girls, so what was I supposed to do, let him have no kids? He needed a little help."
I just laughed, a bitter sound. "So, I’m clearing the path for someone who won't be 'serious' about you. Have fun with that.”
She lost it.

After my fiancée, Sarah, went through with the IUI for her "bestie," Mark, I left the divorce papers on the kitchen counter and walked.
Before I bailed, I commented on their happy-couple-photo that was posted, a pic of the two of them in a hospital corridor. I wrote:
“Divorce papers are ready. Enjoy your ‘happy family’."
A text from Sarah came almost immediately: “What the heck are you doing?”
I ignored it. A minute later, she was calling, demanding, “Leo, why aren’t you responding to my text?”
I was stunned she started off so aggressively. Hearing her anger just made me laugh.
The irony. Sarah was always telling me she was child-free and didn’t want kids ruining her life. I loved kids, but I loved her more, so I respected her decision.
And now, she was artificially inseminating herself for Mark?
And then had the audacity to demand why I hadn't responded to her texts.
Sarah seemed to realize she’d crossed a line because her tone shifted a little. She said, “Leo, Mark’s family wants him to have kids. I didn’t want him to feel pressured.”
"Think of this baby as a gift from Mark to us, okay? Please don’t be so dramatic!”
I couldn't help but laugh again at her audacity.
Sarah got pissed. “Leo, are you being serious right now? Mark's not into girls, so what was I supposed to do, let him have no kids?"
“You and Mark are practically brothers, this kid’s practically family! Can’t you just look at this like it’s your own kid?!”
Mark is my half-brother, my mom’s love child from an affair.
I pulled up my phone and looked at the picture again. Sarah and Mark, holding hands, in a hospital corridor. The caption read: Finally pregnant with our baby! I’ll always be there for you both!
Seeing it again was like being sucker-punched. The pain in my chest was brutal.
I managed to get a grip. “Whatever. I like kids, sure, but I’m not gonna raise someone else’s.”
“You’re always saying I'm dramatic. I’m clearing the path for someone who won't be 'serious' about you.”
I hung up, ending the call.
Sarah blew up my phone after that, but I ignored it.
I felt like crap. But I had no one to talk to about it.
I’d loved Sarah for ten years, and dated her for that long too. And in the end, I just wasn't enough.
