The day before our wedding, I received wedding photos of my fiancée, Amelia, with another man. Looking at the picture of the happy couple, I calmly told Amelia I wanted a divorce.
Her assistant, Zach, called me in tears, begging me not to be angry. "Mr. Morrison, it’s all my fault! I sent them to the wrong address! Please don’t be mad at Amelia!"
In the background, I heard Amelia’s soothing voice. "It’s okay, Zach. He won’t be mad. He can’t live without me."
I hung up, leaving the divorce papers on the table, and walked out.
…
When Amelia returned, I was packing, movers hauling boxes out of our apartment. She stood in the doorway, surveying the scene before finally acknowledging me.
"Daniel, stop this. You're being ridiculous. Don't pull this childish runaway stunt again." Her voice was sharp, her expression impatient.
Normally, I would’ve rushed to her side, asking what was wrong, offering comfort and reassurance. Not anymore.
I turned, picked up the divorce papers, and walked towards her. “Perfect timing. Sign these. We can finalize it later.”
She glanced at the papers, her brow furrowing. "Daniel, don’t be absurd. Zach just sent the photos to the wrong address. He was crying in my office for half an hour because you yelled at him."
"He’s just a kid, Daniel. Why are you being so mean?"
Zach. Young, handsome, charming, and broke. He offered Amelia everything I couldn’t. And Amelia had more money than she knew what to do with.
She saw I wasn’t responding, so she softened her tone. She snatched the papers from my hand, ripped them up, and tossed them in the trash. “I’ll get rid of the photos, okay? If that’s what this is about.”
Was it? Any normal person would be furious, seeing their fiancée’s wedding photos with another man. But I wasn’t angry. Just…numb. And then…relieved.
"It's fine. Do whatever you want. It doesn’t matter to me anymore,” I said.
“Daniel, just stop it. Apologize to Zach after the wedding tomorrow, and we’ll forget this ever happened.”
I laughed. “Apologize? To him?” I looked at her, my voice dripping with sarcasm. “You think he deserves an apology?”
Her face hardened. "Daniel, don't push me. You will apologize to Zach tomorrow. Or else…"
"Or else what? You'll hit me? Kick me out of your family’s mansion?" I cut her off. "Don’t bother. We’re getting a divorce. Call off the wedding. Or…go ahead with it. Just…replace me with him."
She saw I was serious. Her voice turned cold. “Are you sure about this, Daniel? If you walk out that door, you’re never coming back. You’ll be cut off. Completely.”
I stared at her, the woman I’d loved for so many years, and wondered how we’d gotten here. Her face, so familiar, yet the words coming out of her mouth…they were from a stranger.
She thought I couldn't live without her, without her family’s money, their status. She didn’t even know what I truly wanted.
I pushed past her, grabbed my suitcase, and walked out.
“You’re nothing without me, Daniel! You’re nothing without my ...
